我只能說，我這半年來所經歷的，

週三的時候性格分析的結果出爐，一切都如我所料，

或者有些出乎我所料。

屬性最高的項目分是表達性、邏輯性跟親和性，

最低的兩項是務實與成熟性。

負責解說的講師斬釘截鐵的說：

「那就是妳，不會改變的部份。」

這部份，大抵是如我所料的。

出乎我所料的，是我竟然是屬於「創意性」的人格特質？

我是喜歡有趣的事物跟想法沒錯，

但離真正的創意鬼才應該也是十萬八千里吧？

記得六個月前，我還在親和型那個區塊。

誰說，人不會變？

其他額外的驚喜是，在所謂的「社會期望」這個項目，我屬於太高的那群。

意外的全班48個人裡頭居然只有四個人（包括我在內）是屬於社會期望太高。

所謂「社會期望太高」講白了就是你有多在乎外界對你的評價，

你有多希望和別人維持良好的關係，想要予人好印象的程度。

講師自己說自己是屬於「社會期望太低」的類型，她不在乎別人怎麼看她。

老實說，對於這種說法我是相當懷疑的。

真的有人，不在乎自己生活周遭，要天天跟妳互動的人，怎麼看你？是否喜歡你嘛？

如果周遭的人都討厭你，你還是可以無視這一切，天天歡樂地過自己的日子？

或許有人可以，但確實，我是不行的。

而且　我也不能理解　為什麼人得要這樣過日子？

我會努力讓我生活周遭的氣氛維持正面愉快。

但不是為了討好任何人，而是因為不愉快的氣氛會讓我感到痛苦！

當我問說，那麼我要如何才能增進我性格上比較弱的部份，

講師似乎覺得我的問題很蠢。

那就是妳，何必要勉強去改？是吧？

所以，如果你是個比較缺乏數字概念的人，

那你就永遠放棄自己理財？

所以，如果你是個比較缺乏運動細胞的人，

那你就永遠別想享受律動的快感？

我不是個特別有數字概念的人，但我現在可以靜下來看財報。

我不是個特別有運動細胞的人，但我現在可以卯起來跑10K。

It's not how good you are.

It's how good you want to be.

這會難懂嘛？

我並不是說　我可以或想要當個職業的運動員或是財務長。

我是說　要相信　人是可以學習的　只要你真心想的話。

好心的笨蛋ｏｒ壞心的天才？

幾年前吧，前老闆曾問過我一個問題：

「如果，今天，有好心的笨蛋跟壞心的天才，

而妳只能選擇其中一位，作為長期互動的對象，妳會選誰？」

當時楞了半餉，心想這是什麼爛問題？

但認真的個性使然，還真的搔頭苦思了起來。。。

最後，我回答：

「好心的笨蛋吧？！最起碼，他是好心的，不會害人！

相對的，壞心的天才不是很可怕嗎？」

前老闆點著頭說：「有道理，我也這麼認為，但...我又實在無法忍受愚笨的人......」

這麼多年過去，才知道，原來我對自己的認知錯得有多麼離譜...

原來只有好心是不夠的。

曾經那樣熟悉而今卻再也記不得永遠消失了的嗓音…

那股不捨的情緒又讓我想起06年寫的一些心情記事

加上近來生活上發生的一些事情讓我有很深的感觸

其實我並不是真的在乎是不是所有的人都喜歡我

（當然我絕對不想被大家討厭　應該沒有人熱愛被討厭這種事情吧？）

對習慣別離的我而言我所真正在乎的其實是

在稍縱即逝的人生旅途中　我是否盡可能留下了美好的事物？

因為人生苦短　

因為生命應該浪費在美好的事物上

看了達人的攝影札記有感

達人在家族的網頁上寫了自己對攝影的看法

引發我一連串的回憶與想法

本想立刻回應但又怕把氣氛弄得太過沉重於是就放棄了

但看了大家的回覆後我想應該還好

所以我也來談談「拍照」對我而言是什麼吧
（技術這麼爛的情況下實在不好意思說自己在「攝影」^^|||）

我是祖母一手帶大的

人生中的前十七年生命幾乎可說是以奶奶為中心向外拓展的旅程

年復一年惱人的作文題目「母親節」、「父親節」、「中秋節」

說穿了其實都是以奶奶為藍圖瞎掰出來的情節

對我而言奶奶是父親、是母親，

更是我對「親人」所有意涵的理解

高二那年在尚未摺滿999隻紙鶴前奶奶因肝癌過世了

最後一次凝視著她是穿著彷彿清朝姥姥似的服裝

多詭異阿面對一個這樣從小帶我到大的人

自始至終我竟未能替她流下一滴淚

神父的話語繚繞耳際：

「對於基督徒而言死亡不是生命的結束而是永生的開始」

我清楚地記得當時腦子裡想的是：

「這不是她…這怎會是她呢？再說，好歹奶奶也應該是穿和服！」

大火帶走一切的喜怒哀樂

剩下的不過是一片難以辨識的灰燼

腦海裡想著的還是那一句：

「這怎會是她…...」

淚也始終未能流下

人的記憶力是奇特的

總以為深刻的、難以忘懷的人事物

往往在短短數月後便很難清晰的想起所有的細節

她的容貌如何？神情又是如何？脣形原來是這樣的嗎？

若不看照片闔上雙眼憑著記憶根本無法描繪出她的模樣

縱然整整十七年她照顧我陪伴我

然而看著照片的時候卻又覺得

怎麼也捕捉不到那本屬於她的神韻

這也不是她

人的記憶力果真是奇特的

直到某天去了總是一起去的大賣場

慣性的回頭看到熟悉的商品熟悉的場景

卻看不到熟悉的身影時

「死亡」與「離去」這件事情才有了具體的形象及意義

於是眼前的世界開始模糊模糊模糊

只剩下手裡提的那條舒潔衛生紙

我想我瞳孔的光圈開到1.4…

因此「拍照」這件事對現階段的我來說

其實不過是我回憶過去已然逝去

或終將逝去的那些人事物的一種方式罷了

只是這一次我希望是用我自己的眼靜靜地凝視及記憶

留下只屬於我的回憶中特有的神韻

加上也好一陣子沒看電影了

所以週五晚上約了同學一起去看

購票時發現票價居然要290 感到相當錯愕

（因為是在真善美戲院阿！在微風看有信用卡優惠都不用這麼貴吧...）

詢問的結果售票小姐說：喔～因為這片比較久～

當下還是覺得這個答案很莫名其妙

從沒聽說比較久所以收費比較高的

魔戒哈利波特都很久阿也沒有比較貴吧？（有嗎？？）

不過反正要看只有乖乖付錢買票

電影從晚上七點半左右開始...

過了一小時候男女主角才剛認識見了第一面！

我轉頭跟同學說：現在才認識所以應該真的會演上一段時間吧...

然後...邁入第二個小時...男女主角還沒有擁抱！

（如果是好萊塢的片應該小孩都生下來唸完大學了吧...）

我們總算瞭解售票小姐說：「喔～因為這片比較久～」的真諦...

最後男女主角好不容易講出一句我愛你...我們也好不容易走出戲院的時候

已經是十一點十五分了！！！！

很妙的一部片同樣也很妙的印度人

Monsoon season is a welcome relief to drought conditions in many areas of the world. Monsoons can also bring about widespread famine and enough rain to kill hundreds of people in floods. While the Asia and India monsoons are famous, there are even monsoon season in the United States. So, what is a monsoon?

Answer: Monsoons, or rainy seasons, are a shift in wind direction which causes excessive rainfall in many parts of the world including Asia, North America, South America, and Africa. The primary mechanism behind a monsoon is a shift in global wind patterns.

During most of the year, winds blow from land to ocean making the air dry. Winds originating from land are called continental. During certain months of the year, the winds begin to blow from the ocean to the land making the air moist. Winds originating over a body of water are calledmaritime. This moist ocean air is what causes monsoonal rains over many countries.

Why Do Wind Patterns Shift in a Monsoon?

Differential heating occurs when the sun heats the land and oceans. Incoming solar radiation heats landmasses faster than large bodies of water. In tropical and sub-tropical climates, solar heating is most intense in the summer months. As the land heats throughout the summer, a large low pressure system builds over the land. The heat from the sun also warms the surrounding ocean waters, but the effect happens much more slowly due to the high heat capacity of water. Therefore, the ocean temperatures as well as the layer of air above the oceans stays cooler longer. The cooler air above the oceans is moist and more dense creating a high pressure zone relative to the pressure above the landmass.

Winds flow from high pressure areas to low pressure areas due to the pressure gradient. Once the temperature conditions on the land and oceans change, the resultant pressure changes cause the winds to change from a land-to-ocean direction to an ocean-to-landdirection. Monsoon season does not end as abruptly as it begins. While it takes time for the land to heat up, it also takes time for that land to cool in the fall. This makes monsoon season a time of rainfall that diminishes rather than ends.

History of Monsoon Studies

The word monsoon is derived from the Arabic word mausim meaning season. The most famous monsoon is the Indian monsoon. The intense rainfall in these regions can cause massive flooding and destruction of crops. In dry climates, monsoons are an important replenishment for life as water is brought back into drought-stricken zones of the world. Part of the reason India gets such an intense monsoon season is due to its elevation. The higher the land mass, the higher the likelihood of the development of a low pressure zone. The Tibetan Plateau to the north of India is one of the largest and highest plateaus on Earth.

The earliest explanation for monsoon development came in 1686 from the English astronomer and mathematician Edmond Halley. Halley is the man who first conceived the idea that differential heating of land and ocean caused these giant sea-breeze circulations. As with all scientific theories, these ideas have been expanded upon.

Monsoon seasons can actually fail bringing intense drought and famines to many parts of the world. From 1876-1879, India experienced such a monsoon failure. To study these droughts, the Indian Meteorological Service (IMS) was created. Later, Gilbert Walker, a British mathematician, began to study the effects of monsoons in India looking for patterns in climate data. He became convinced that there was a seasonal and directional reason for monsoon changes.

It is a natural supposition that there should be in weather free oscillations with fixed natural periods, and that these oscillations should persist except when some external disturbance produces discontinuous changes in phase or amplitude.—Sir Gilbert T. Walker (Walker, 1925, pages 340–341)

According to the Climate Prediction Center, Sir Walker used the term ‘Southern Oscillation’ to describe the east-west seesaw effect of pressure changes in climate data. In the review of the climate records, Walker noticed that when pressure rises in the east, it usually falls in the west, and vice versa. Walker also found that Asian monsoon seasons were often linked to drought in Australia, Indonesia, India, and parts of Africa.

Jacob Bjerknes, a Norwegian meteorologist, would later recognize that the circulation of winds, rain, and weather were part of a Pacific-wide air circulation pattern he called Walker circulation.

New Theories on the Causes of Monsoons

Theories of the development of monsoons have stood firm for over 300 years. Classical thinking on monsoons is that their development is sparked by the differential heating of land and ocean as described above. But in a recent NASA Earth Observatory release, those ideas may be changing. Geoscientists at the California Institute of Technology have been working on new ideas as to exactly why monsoons develop.

Two researchers, Schneider and Simona Bordoni of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado, used computer models to re-create an Earth with no landmasses. Surprisingly, they found that differential heating was not a necessary component to creating monsoons. Instead, they concluded monsoons arise because of an interaction between tropical air circulation and large-scale turbulence in the middle latitudes. The large middle latitude disturbances modify circulation in tropical regions causing rapid circulation changes which can bring on the characteristic high surface winds and heavy rainfall of the monsoon.

Other Seasonal Weather Patterns

Hurricane season is another example of a seasonal weather pattern caused by the differential heating of land and ocean. During hurricane season, the ocean waters must reach a minimum average temperature of about 80 degrees Fahrenheit (~27 degreesCelsius) for hurricanes to occur. While you may think the highest temperatures occur in summer, ocean waters again take longer to heat. Therefore, hurricane intensity and frequency is typically greatest in the late summer and fall. Therefore, ocean temperatures must be ready for hurricanes to develop.

NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- Pista Devi struggles to keep her toes from poking out through the holes in her shoes, as she pushes and pulls a wicked-looking farm tool. She is a widow, struggling to feed herself and five children.
Pista Devi is struggling to feed herself and five children in a region with a rain deficit 85 percent below normal.
She is bone thin but strong. She has to be. The soil is as hard as stone and as dry as the desert. Pista is trying to prepare the land for seeding.
But her part of India is dealing with a rain deficit that is 85 percent below normal.
"If the rains don't come then these fields will remain empty," Devi says.
"No one will call us for work, and the children will have to go hungry. We won't have anything to eat."
Devi is among roughly 600 million people in Indiawho make a living off the land. That is about 60 percent of India's population of 1.1 billion.

Most of the country is suffering from a rain deficit. The monsoon has been delayed in some parts of the country. Usually the season begins around the first of June.
In developed countries, irrigation is common and electricity readily available, but both are a luxury for most Indian farmers.
Rainwater is key to crop survival and the livelihoods of those who work the farms.
Devinder Sharma is a food and trade policy analyst. He says "65 percent of farmers in India rely on rainwater."
And India's economy relies heavily on agriculture. It accounts for about 17 percent of the gross domestic product.
"We have always seen whenever something goes wrong with agriculture the entire economy goes topsy-turvy," Sharma says.
But the government says there is still time for the monsoon to work its magic.

"What I planted in the farms did not grow because of the dryness... ." farmer Vijay Pal Sharma says.
He is worried about his family and his village where 90 percent of the 2,000 households farm the land. Eighty percent of India's farmers own very small plots of land, typically less than an acre. Not only do farmers get paid for their crops, but often their families live off what they grow.
"There is so much poverty here," farmer Sharma says. "If the rains do not arrive, then people will die of hunger."
It is a fear shared by his neighbors. In the scorching heat of the mid day sun, laborer Pista Devi has left the field. She sits on the floor of her home --- fashioned from cow dung --- and worries. She is troubled knowing she will not be the last in her family to rely on the whims of the weather. Her five children will too.
"They will do the same work. They won't get a regular job. They are not educated. Without money I couldn't send them to school."

The world's population at the end of last year included 42 million displaced people, 80 percent of them in developing nations, according to a report this week by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
Many of these refugees are living in minimal standards for shelter and are exposed daily to the harshest elements of weather, the report says.
For example, in Pakistan, some 300,000 refugees are living outdoors, in tents or similar structures, said Michael Kocher, vice president of international programs for the International Rescue Committee.
That part of the world has been hit hard by extreme weather over the past couple of months. First, extreme heat plagued Pakistan, with temperatures in May and June soaring past 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius). The heat is escalating the discomfort for many.
"People are living in cramped situations, often unsanitary situations, and it's very hot," Kocher said. "In many places, there is not enough clean water or adequate sanitation. Heat exacerbates that problem."
As World Refugee Day approaches -- it falls on Saturday this year -- the forecast calls for even more dramatic weather changes in the coming weeks. The term "monsoon" refers to a seasonal reversal of wind that typically occurs in late June or early July. For countries like Pakistan and India, this change brings daily, nonstop downpours.
The change in the weather is essential for local crops, according to John Fasullo, project scientist with the National Center for Atmospheric Research.
"The Southeast Asian monsoon is the key source for regional agriculture," he told CNN. "It provides the majority of the moisture to support food needs for one-half the world's population. ... It also brings a beneficial cooling of the temperatures."
The problem is, monsoon rains can also cause devastating floods. Fasullo says the threat for flooding can be "continual from late June through early September."
In Pakistan, for example, where agencies have witnessed a large increase in displaced people over the past year, the monsoon of 2008 was particularly intense.

"The camps are quite threadbare," Kocher said. "Tents are held to the ground by rope. It's hard to keep people dry. The ground gets muddy, which can lead to dirty water and bad sanitation facilities."
Vulnerability to nature's dangerous elements is not only a concern for people displaced in Pakistan. Refugees in Afghanistan are subject to brutal winters, while in Iraq, scorching heat and sandstorms are common challenges for those without sufficient shelter.

「美國沒在等你！」
偶像藝人宣布暫時停止演藝活動時，經常面帶微笑在記者會上這麼說：「我要去美國學語言和音樂。」
各位不覺得這麼說的，通常都是事業開始走下坡的藝人嗎？沒有哪個偶像會在人氣鼎盛的事業高峰期前往美國的。

這些人之中，的確有幾個會以令人刮目相看的成長回到國內，但絕大多數都是最後什麼屁也沒有，落魄地回國。他們之所以失敗是因為一心只依賴他人，認為：「只要去了美國就有辦法，美國一定可以給我些什麼。」

想學英語而出國的人真的不少，而他們前往的地點一定是美國。
嘴上說著「我要到美國拚一拚」、「我要在英語系國家好好學會英語」，表面上看來氣勢十足，其實說這些話的人大部分都是考不上日本大學而不知所措的傢伙。

父母一聽到自己的蠢蛋兒女這麼說，馬上拿出留學資金。就是這樣，日本笨蛋才會大量流往海外。我想替這些父母們說句公道話：「媽的，哪來的閒錢啊！」
不准撒嬌，那是逃避！

工作不順遂、人際關係複雜，因此認為只要換個環境，自己就能夠改變，這想法真是大錯特錯！想出國，在日本改變自己後再走。如果真有想做的事情，就加把勁在日本找出來。在日本無法全力以赴的人，去了國外也不可能努力；花高額費用留學，下場只是換來比現在更悲慘的回憶後逃回日本而已。
這種傢伙去了美國，只是徒增人家的困擾。

我絕對贊成趁著年輕時去國外旅遊，體驗未知的世界。話雖如此，我可不是叫你去香港血拚一堆名牌貨回來。
聽我這麼一說，有人就問我：「老師，去哪個國家好？」
笨蛋！你不會自己想嗎？

In the name of “stress”

今天一次把該掛的診都掛了！

先看了牙醫，然後又去了皮膚科，都得到現代醫學無處不適用的答覆：「stress」。

記得幾前年我胃痙攣跟胃炎的時候，醫生也是跟我說：「stress」。

更早幾年我哥因為常腹瀉去看醫生，說是「腸躁症」，也是因為「stress」。

舉凡小至便秘，大到胃潰瘍，看來可能都可以用「stress」來回答…

總之，今天先去了牙醫，做了例行的洗牙。

親切的牙醫師問我：「是不是有咬硬物的習慣？」

心想：「咬硬物？我又不是老大…哪會有這種怪異的習慣？」

於是回答：「沒有耶…有『人』有這種習慣嗎？為什麼會這麼問？？」

醫師笑說：「有些人喜歡有事沒事就咬冰塊…因為妳右排後方的牙齒有很明顯的磨痕，或者妳有『磨牙』的習慣嗎？」

這回我更詫異了：「磨牙？我？不可能吧…從來沒聽人說過我會磨牙…」

聽我這一說，醫師顯得有些不解：「那就怪了…那妳睡醒時會不會覺得兩頰痠痠的？」

我一邊回憶，一邊頻頻點頭：「嗯…這倒是有…這一陣子還蠻常這樣的…」

醫師像是得到滿意的答覆，笑說：「那就是了，妳睡著時磨牙，自己不知道而已。」

從1980年出生至今，這大概是我聽過第二恐怖的診斷…

驚悚程度僅次於2006年大愛眼科的醫師說：「～會瞎掉！」

於是惶恐地問：「怎麼會這樣？這樣『臉會變大』嗎？」

醫生或許覺得我怪，笑說：「通常會磨牙主要的因素是由於『stress』。『理論上』，臉是會變大，因為增生肌肉的關係，會變成『國字臉』…」

（醫師跟教授都很愛說『理論上』，但我比較關心『實際上』…畢竟，這是我的臉啊！）

「不過，那不是重點…重點是牙齒的磨損會……」

（不不不，醫師你完全誤解了，這就是最重要的重點阿！）

醫師後面講什麼我完全沒聽進去，對我來說「臉會變大」就是「重點」阿！！更別說會變成「國字臉」了，那根本就等於得了絕症阿…

於是我又問：「那有救嗎？如果變大的話，還會變回來嗎？」

醫師搖搖頭：「沒辦法喔！（cow那不真成了絕症了！）不過妳不用擔心，妳沒有這種跡象。不過要注意，不能再繼續磨牙了…」

我皺著眉頭：「醫師，如果我可以控制，我當然不會去磨。但睡著以後…難道我要一直不睡覺嗎？而且你剛說主要是因為『stress』，『stress』這種東西…似乎也不是我能控制的吧？醫師…我不要變大臉阿…你一定要救救我…囧」

親切的醫師到底還是親切，面對患者奇怪的問題跟關懷，依舊一臉和藹可親地說：「妳可以睡前泡澡、聽聽輕音樂（是的！絕對不能再聽英文教學廣播！！）、用熱毛巾敷敷兩頰，都會好很多……如果都沒有改善的話…就要用『咬合板』治療…」

就這樣，在牙醫那不幸地得知，我居然有「stress」，導致半夜磨牙，而且可能因此變成藥石罔效的大臉怪！！

這個恐怖的診斷結果反而更讓我覺得「stressful」…一整個心神不寧…不管是走在路上，或是搭捷運，每隔五分鐘就忍不住研究起窗上自己的倒影，看臉有沒有變得更大！！

就這樣，帶著滿臉的「stress」，我來到了皮膚科。

生理期前長的幾顆痘子，一直到現在還沒好。更慘的是，額前那顆還益發惡化，結果弄得我現在半邊額頭都腫了起來！！

皮膚科醫師嘰哩呱啦講了一堆，說我是易長痘痘型的肌膚，說要持續治療12周才會見效，又說成年人長痘子多半都是因為作息不正常（這個我確實是…）、愛吃油炸物（這個我已經很久不吃，也很少吃了），跟「stress」！！（這個…我只能無言了吧…）

總之，今天真是「stressful」的一天…

神哪。。。拜託，請不要讓我變成大臉怪阿阿阿。。。囧rz

雖然醫生說大臉沒得救...但我還是希望能力網狂瀾...

不過怎麼感覺上...左邊這位...臉一點也不小阿...

常人、天才、瘋子的差異?

為什麼貼這篇？

老實說我也不知道...

可能是因為也曾讀著《政治作為一種志業》

而感動不己吧...

看著看著，讓我想起了「真愛旅程」裡的John。

談起「真愛旅程」這部片，或許讓多數人印象深刻的，

是那三對夫妻背後各自所代表的不同意義。

但整齣戲真正讓我有所感觸的，

反倒是John這個角色所帶出的一些東西。

至於主角與其他兩對夫妻所透漏的訊息，可能是成長的過程裡，或多或少聽過、看過一些，反倒覺得沒什麼值得大書特書的。

為什麼John讓我印象深刻?

因為他是片中「唯一」講真話的人。　

然而，他也是片中「唯一」的「瘋子」。

小時候聽過一個故事，有個國家的人民，因為喝了有毒的水，

於是舉國上下「全」都「瘋」了。

而擁有自己水井的國王，因此倖免於難，

成了國家裡「唯一」的「正常」人。

但，最終，國王卻反被全國的人當成了瘋子。

從這個故事，不知為何又想起了梵谷，

然後又想起了Apple 1997年的廣告。

常人跟天才還有瘋子的差異是什麼？

或許是，常人妥協了，而瘋子跟天才卻堅持了下去。

那天才跟瘋子的差別又是什麼？

或許是，「天才」取得了世俗所謂的「成功」，

而「瘋子」還沒有吧！

等哪天「瘋子」成功了，大夥就會一股腦地說：

我早知道他是個「天才」了吧...

哈這種喜歡亂聯想的習慣真糟糕...

其實，看完經院之路，我所殷切期望的不過就是：

希望不需要到山中、到雪裡，我的困惑，就會得到清晰地解答吧！

這裡是北美洲中西部的大草原。這裡有浩瀚如汪洋的大湖。這裡是詩人桑德堡筆下雨、霧和雪的故鄉。這裡是多風的聚落。風在湖上湧動，雕刻出Frank Lloyd Wright 的原建築學派和湖濱大道上空連綿的後現代skyline。這裡是風城，風在大街小巷喧嘩，於是會隱約聽到B.B.King 的藍調和巴倫波因大師的馬勒，你會聽到John Malkovich在荒野之狼劇場裡神經質的獨白和Al Bundy的小人物之歌。這裡是風城，當風從草原帶回玉米田的芳香，你會想起厚厚的stuffed pizza,誘人食指大動的pepperoni and cheese。這裡是風城。進步與保守，神聖與褻瀆的多風之城。牛肉和期貨市場，Playboy和印象派，夢幻的白襪隊，少年海明威，Al Capone 的黑道王國，大老闆達利市長的萬年派系統治，68年民主黨大會的流血暴動，傑西、傑克森牧師的彩虹聯盟，還有你當然不會忘記的新興宗教，公牛隊和His Airness 邁可、喬丹。人們親切地叫這裡風城，一個彷彿永遠懷抱著紐約情結的，憂鬱而優雅的second city。

但是這裡沒有山。沒有那個在晴朗的天氣時我從窗口可以一眼望見的七星山，沒有那個在落雨時站在淡水港邊和我對望的觀音山，沒有那個我從關渡平原回家時永遠蹲在那裡的忠實而樸拙的紗帽山。沒有山。這裡是一望無際的大草原。沒有地表起伏的修飾，這個草原上的聚落以赤裸的身軀直接承受時間與空間。草原上的住民以赤裸的身軀承受時間的流動，空間的覆蓋。風是草原住民的悲歡磬欬，遊走於歷史的罅隙，魅惑詩人的心。

然而我告訴你，這裡畢竟有一座山。一座沒有形體的山。一座由經院的黑色門牆與斑駁典籍構築起來的山。巨大的山。經院之山。在山中，時間靜止，青春飛逝，草原之風化做雨雪。一群又一群來自四方的信眾，向山的深處高處攀爬，追尋信仰、真理與知識的峰顛。在這裡，到處是挫折、懷疑、絕望和虛榮的假山頭，到處可見凡庸癡愚者的殘骸。在山中，青春飛逝，時間靜止，生命之燭在兩頭燃燒，而那片壯美的黑色山脈依舊是謎樣的沈默。信徒以生命交換沈默的意義。沒有誰真正到達過傳說中的頂峰，人們設計出成功的量表，測量信徒和真理的距離，測量知識與無限的關係。於是紅顏白髮，亦步亦趨，追求一種半世俗的功業，想像的不朽。突起於平地的這座經院之山，彷彿成為草原與宇宙的中介。它為草原民族的直觀感性，添加了一抹沈鬱而悲劇的理性；當風自大山吹來，你聽見了詩歌和哲學的齟齬。

我只是一個眷戀紅塵的俗人，然而，我竟也誤闖了這座沒有形體的魔山，並且被它吞噬了一段漫長的生命。就像湯馬斯曼的《魔山》裡的主人翁Hans Castorp一樣，在這段漫長的歲月當中，雖然並不情願，我卻被一股奇妙的力量所牽引，一步一步地走向這座山的深處。在這段多岐的路途當中，我目睹了求知者的癡迷、狂喜與絕望，也見證了那片黑色的，令人心悸而又不可解的沈默山壁。這座經院之山，吞噬了我的青春，卻也用困頓挫折給予我平凡浮誇的生命一點虔敬、一點謙遜、一點深刻。

我為什麼來到這裡？其實，這一切都始於一場誤會。
起先我不知道事情會是這個樣子的。

大學時代，在那段像夢一般的歲月裡，我沈醉於改造社會的學生運動之中。我的同志們嘴巴上經常掛著「革命」或者「運動理論」之類的東西。「實踐」－praxis－變成我們這些自命進步不甘做蛋頭的「自由派」學生心中一個神奇的字眼，儘管我們沒有人搞的清楚到底那是什麼意思。學運圈裡這些「理論」往往是由經驗、常識、直覺、黨外雜誌上學來的政治分析，和一知半解的社會科學理論拼湊起來的。那時候南方朔是學運份子所崇拜的理論大師，他的《憤怒之愛》被我們奉為經典。他曾經說過一句名言：「只有天才才配搞學運，因為你既要會搞運動也要會讀書。」大概是受到這句話的影響吧，當時的我，也曾真的一度醉心於建構「運動理論」，想把校園民主，像廢除審稿、普選之類的瑣碎議題，和民主、社會正義、台灣獨立、乃至顛覆資本主義世界體系等等所有流傳在戒嚴時期的台灣社會的一切地上地下的進步論述全部串起來，搞出一套包括綱領、戰略、戰術、甚至形上學和美學的體系。我的夢想，是模仿六零年代美國學運領袖SDS的Tom Hayden，寫出一篇台灣學運的《休倫港宣言》。

現在看起來，這個想法有點可笑，不過那時我的態度確實是很認真的。那是一個苦悶的年代，戒嚴彷彿把台灣關進了永恆的暗夜，我們被迫在黑暗中摸索出路。那恰好是一九八四的前夕，我們彷彿就在這裡親歷歐威爾筆下那個鬼魅般的極權社會，那個信仰「無知即力量」，那個以暴力和謊言構築的社會。然而鮮嫩的青春是不易死滅的，無邊的暗夜與成人世界偽善的笑聲反而在我們心頭逐漸醞釀了懷疑與憤怒，我們學會在謊言的背面尋找真理，在諷刺和詭論中探求光源，我們於是慢慢明白統治者畏懼人民擁有知識，因為知識就是權力。

「知識就是權力」，這是我對知識和實踐之間的關聯所學到的第一堂課。對於渴望推翻那個令人窒息的體制的我，「知識必須從屬於行動」幾乎是一個道德律令，無助於實踐的知識不僅是無用的，而且是褻瀆的。然而，我並不知道知識怎樣才會創造權力。我只是直覺地相信，「知識」裡面必然隱藏著解放之道。並且，只有通過「越界」式（trangressive）的閱讀，也就是在統治者禁止或不喜歡的知識裡面，才能找到有效的「革命理論」。在專制政權下成長的青年在知識上本來就經常是晚熟的，而我更因為反抗之路與求知之路的交纏重疊，知識之芽的萌發從一開始就缺乏自主與純粹的熱情。我在筆記本的第一頁，寫下馬克思在《費爾巴哈提綱》的那句話：「哲學家只是用不同的方式詮釋這個世界，而問題在改變世界。」和古今台外許許多多的反抗者一樣，這句充滿熱情的名言，成為我追求知識與實踐的座右銘。

我一邊讀影印本的《台灣人四百年史》和《被背叛的台灣》，一邊讀書攤買來的魯迅的《吶喊》、郭廷以的《近代中國史綱》和班上香港僑生Ambrose偷帶進來的史諾的《西行漫記》；一邊讀《八十年代》、《暖流》和《深耕》，一邊又讀《夏潮》和《大地》。我跑到社會系聽老葉的馬克斯，從文圖印英文版的《一八四四手稿》和《Student Activism》，在活動中心238室社辦讀馬庫色的《單面向的人》、唐山盜印的華勒斯坦和鄭學稼的《列寧評傳》，在寢室翻字典徹夜苦讀從重慶南路的「西風」到手的Peter Nettl 的《羅莎.盧森堡》和Issac Deutscher的托洛斯基傳第一冊《Prophet Betrayed》。總是放在我案前的，則是同樣從西風買到的馬克思的《Grundrisse》和Dov Ronen的《論自決》。我耽讀陳映真的《夜行貨車》也愛李喬的《寒夜》和宋澤萊的《蓬萊誌異》。我也開始自修日文，為了想讀懂父親書房裡面那套小學館的日本史裡面，關於台灣和日本社會運動的那一冊，劉進慶的《台灣戰後經濟分析》，和從李鴻禧老師那裡印來的《東京大學教育改革報告書》。

這一切我並沒有讀懂多少，然而我還是一邊和同伴們搞一些小小的造反活動，一邊似懂非懂但卻貪婪地閱讀所有可以到手的禁書。當所有這些偉大而相互矛盾衝突的想法把年輕而渴望愛情的我逼得喘不過氣來時，我會跨上機車，走訪碧潭橋頭那個簡陋的「碧亭」，尋找七等生那神經質的憂鬱，讓吊橋畔的清風明月一澆胸中塊壘。那是一段激烈的青春，理智、熱情與蒼白的頹廢在心中不停輪流翻攪的青春。戒嚴令下的青春。

一次一次的行動，一本一本的理論之後，我逐漸有一種模糊的感覺，覺得自己好像抓到那柄革命之鑰了。我開始發展一點小理論，像「社會包圍校園」、「新民粹」、「職業學生運動者」之類的概念，一頁頁的手稿，也慢慢累積了起來。這是我大三升大四時候的事情。那時候，雖然已經卸下了代聯會主席的職位，卻仍深陷在運動的狂熱之中，經常到其他學校搞「革命輸出」，偶而也在李文忠辦的串連營隊發表一些感言，於是一時之間，竟也開始覺得自己有了一點「理論家」的架勢。甚至，偶而我也會收到學弟妹的來信，以崇拜的口吻向我討教我的「理論基礎」和「行動哲學」。直到有一天，剛從芝加哥回台灣的學長吳乃德的一席話粉碎了我的幻想。

那是在烏來娃娃谷，作良辦的台大校內串連的營隊。我被邀請發表演講，大約是談《國民黨的國家機器》之類的題目。因為前一陣子正好和阿禹在談Nicos Poulantzas，於是就借用讀到的幾個概念，像「壓迫的國家機器」、「意識型態的國家機器」來分析國民黨的專政。可笑的是，我要等到幾年後才知道這兩個觀念其實是Althusser發展出來的。我講完後，乃德負責講評。這是我和他第一次見面，在此之前，只知道他是政治系的學長和黨外新生代著名的理論家，負笈美國多年，思考嚴謹，被不少黨外的朋友看做「學院派」，而當時我們比較熟悉的，大多是像南方朔或林濁水這樣的學術體制外的理論家。他是一個溫和而客氣的人，但他的評論卻簡單、直接而尖銳：「這是一篇很好的政治宣傳，可惜完全沒有經驗分析。沒有基於經驗的分析，不能幫助我們真正瞭解國民黨，也不能幫助我們的行動。」

我已經記不得這句話有沒有刺傷我這個「理論家」的自尊了。我唯一記得的是，從那一刻開始一直到營隊結束，乃德這句話一直在我的腦袋裡面盤桓不去。「政治宣傳」和「知識」有什麼不同？我幾年來囫圇吞棗，滿腦子嚇人的「大論述」算不算「知識」？知識到底和行動有什麼關係？什麼樣的理論才能真正幫助我們的實踐？
從那以後，我開始比較常到八德路找吳乃德聊天。從他那裡，我開始對瞭解了一點在台大政治系學不到的當代西方政治學的發展，從他書架的藏書上，我開始知道一點像「威權主義」、「組合主義」這類的概念，也是從他那邊，我開始多知道了一點芝加哥大學的事，和Brian Barry 以及Jon Elster這幾個當代政治理論家的名字。我也第一次知道黨外的Laba（邱義仁）和老賀（賀端藩）原來都出身芝大政治系。乃德是一個親切而慷慨的學長，他借給我Barry的政治學導論名著《sociologist, economist and democracy 》，也提醒我不要忽視雙葉盜版那套Handbooks of Political Science。我也聽他的建議，開始讀裡面Juan Linz那篇威權\極權政體的精彩分析。他甚至提議要和我合作寫一篇論文，然而他的用意其實是在提攜後進，因為我很清楚知道自己還沒有足夠的能力寫真正嚴謹的學術論文。當時他正在發展他的博士論文，跟我「合作」等於是和我分享他的理論。我知道後來他也以同樣的方式幫助幾個學運圈的學弟妹在就學時就能發表學術論文，而我大概是第一個他想協助的對象吧。可惜的是，我的學術基礎實在太差，也從來沒有做研究的經驗，和他討論了幾次，每次回家都茫然不知從何著手，過不久也就不了了之了。

這次寫論文的失敗經驗對我而言是一次嚴重的挫折。長久以來因為厭惡國民黨對學術的干預催折導致我對學院知識完全不信任，乃至鄙夷。當時的我認為台大在知識和道德上已經是一所徹底的廢墟，腦筋靈活的學生為了自救就必須自我教育。我們必須走出體制外自己思考自己找書看。我甚至還想出一個要以學運社團為中心在廢墟上「重建台大」的說法。那時候，政治系受到當局的監控、摧殘特別嚴重，所以系上除了胡佛、許介麟等極少數老師的課以外我幾乎完全不去上。其實，這種「體制外」的讀書習慣只不過是我對教育體制的一種無奈的反抗而已，不過，由於找不到適當的人指導，自己一個人這樣讀久了卻在無意間養成一種浮淺的知識態度，一種當時校園流行的「半套理論治天下」的習性。我追求的不是對社會真實的知識，而是被艱澀或激進的文字建構起來的一套套的抽象理論。只要任何理論有助於批判國民黨統治，我就熱情地追逐，管他是批判理論、世界體系、依賴理論、新左、新馬，韋伯，還是當時才在台灣剛出現的傅科。我並不明白－或者並不在乎－每一個我醉心的理論都有它緣起的特殊歷史經驗和問題意識，不能隨便套用。結果是，儘管我號稱追求實踐的理論，這些西方大家的理論卻被我當作了和現實毫不相干的文本來閱讀。和吳乃德這個「實踐的學院派」結識，第一次讓我意識到自己知識態度的毛病。我開始思考，真正的問題可能不一定出在「學院」本身，而是出在受到非學院力量嚴重扭曲的學術環境上面。「『民間學者』雖然很令人欽佩，但『學院派』也可能不是一個那麼讓人臉紅的骯髒字吧！」我開始對嚴謹的，學院式的知識生產方式有了一點敬畏。

當然這並不是說，我從此就一頭栽進了「學院」裡面。事實上，即使是嚴謹學者氣質濃厚如吳乃德，早在學生時代就投身黨外運動，長久以來也始終在熱心追求能夠改造世界的知識。我清楚地記得，他在家裡一邊放俄語版的《國際歌》和Pete Seeger社會政治意識濃厚的民謠給我聽，一邊和我談曾經參與美國左翼份子秘密聚會的經驗。他的身上，同時帶有六零年代式的理想主義和精緻的古典人文主義氣質，我在他八德路二段的家裡，度過了不少愉快的午後與夜晚，也感染了一些吳乃德式的，獨特的浪漫與理想色彩。雖然，我怎樣也學不來他那天生的穩定、平和與耐性。

毫無疑問的，我們都同意知識應該有助於改善這個世界。問題在於，什麼才是「有效」的知識？如果，認識世界是改造世界的前提，我們要透過怎樣的心智過程來認識它呢？負笈海外多年的乃德，把我的注意力從「革命理論」的特殊性，轉移到了「知識」生產的普遍性上面。他並未明講，但我開始有一點瞭解他的意思了：「知識」有一套有別於「行動」的自主邏輯。但是，知識的邏輯是什麼呢？行動的邏輯又是什麼呢？這兩著之間可以怎樣結合呢？乃德沒有給我答案，但我可以清楚的感覺到他也仍然在思索解答。我意識到，馬克思在《費爾巴哈提綱》的那句簡潔的箴言裡面似乎包含了難解的謎。

儘管有了這樣的反省，而我也彷彿接受了吳乃德的鼓勵，對外宣稱將出國留學，尋找「改造台灣社會的理論」，但我並沒有因此就「折節讀書」，也沒有因此就停止和同志們辯論運動路線的問題。學生運動像是一場喧鬧而美麗的夢，所有那些沈重的事物，像理想、知識與實踐，在這裡都變的輕如羽毛。在這場夢境中，世界許諾我們無限的希望與自信，也不很計較我們的焦躁與善變。這段思想上的冒險，很快就隱退到我「學運領袖」熱鬧浮誇生命的背景之中。只不過，我那累積了幾十頁野心勃勃的手稿從此就塵封在我的書櫃之中了。我的《休倫港宣言》也終於一直沒有寫出來。

在這個時期，我已經開始和《新潮流》的朋友們更密切往來，我的實踐視野也從學運擴大到整個台灣的社會政治改造，但我也逐漸產生了另一種困惑。那時，即將畢業的我正面臨選擇出路的苦惱。一方面，我雖然曾經認真考慮過絕對不願「走入體制」，卻也不覺得自己在當時陷入低潮的黨外運動裡可以扮演什麼有用的角色。另一方面，我雖然宣稱打算出國，卻一點也沒有清楚的進修計畫。幾年的「體制外」經驗使我成為一個駁雜、沒有方向、缺乏耐性的人。我從未仔細想過當我不再是學生之後，我要怎樣變成一個「民間學者」或「運動理論家」。最嚴重的是，過度認同「運動」使我幾乎完全喪失了自我認同。我發現除了學運的記憶我一無所有，除了台灣這個「大我」之外我一無自我，我的青春、知識與愛情都緊緊地附著在政治之上，附著在那個狂熱、悲愴而忘我的自由之夢上面。當我從這場夢境醒來，突然發覺自己是一個失去了舞臺的演員。所有我曾為之書空咄咄，輾轉反側的一切，突然之間全都喪失了意義。當兵之前那一整個夏天，我身陷在令人癱瘓的徬徨和沮喪之中；我的心一如斷落的五節芒，在大屯山彙的季節風裡四處飄盪。

我帶著一顆徬徨的心，和行囊裡一本歌德自傳《詩與真實》，一本韋伯選集入伍。風雨蘭陽的歲月中，我寂寞地讀著《政治作為一個志業》和《學術作為一個志業》，一邊回想那段騷動的青春，如此深刻，卻又如此模糊，如此豐富，卻又如此空洞。那終究只是一場舊夢罷，然而在現實之中到底我是誰？我要什麼？我的「志業」是什麼？「連古代的基督徒也很清楚，這世界是魔神統治的，知道捲入政治的人－也就是取得權力和武力為手段的人－和魔鬼的力量締結了協定，知道就這類人的行動而言，"善因必有善果，惡因必有惡果"絕對不是實情；反之，情況往往正好相反。不瞭解這一點的人在政治上實際是個幼童。」韋伯理智的近乎殘酷的話語不斷縈繞耳際，讓我兩手發顫。「在學問的領域裡，唯有那純粹向具體的工作獻身的人，才有"人格"。」所以感傷而善變的我原來終究是一個政治上的幼童，學問世界的異鄉人嗎？所以原來我的生命至此都是一場無事自擾嗎？那麼，除了政治和知識之外，我的生命還有什麼？還有什麼是連韋伯或馬克思也不能奪走的？少年時代曾經多麼熟悉的小奏鳴曲，還是美麗的南湖大山？我像精神崩潰前的韋伯，擺盪在啟蒙與蒙昧的兩端，不能確定自己的面目，自己的想望，甚至自己的心情。

這時後，我接到在東勢當兵的昔日同班同學來信。信中，他說大學時代我在他眼中是「像山一樣的朋友」，我於是想起我們在承德橋下的麵店喝酒談心的神態，和他溫厚的笑容，然而我已經完全記不得自己什麼時候曾經有過像山一樣的穩定與自信了。相反的，我卻感覺現實像巨大的山一樣冷酷地凝視著我。

回信給他，我寫下了歌德的話：
「受到懲罰，始成為一個人。」
然後眼淚就不知不覺地落下來了。

1987年9月退伍，身心俱疲。半個月之後，我來到了芝加哥大學。

「所以你就來到這裡了嗎？你就來這座經院追尋確定、追尋根基、追尋意義嗎？」
「不，我只是一株空心的台灣五節芒，被歷史吹落在陌生的大湖之畔。」

我沒有來追尋什麼。我只是跟著走。我來是為了逃避選擇。就這樣提著行囊，來到這座經院。圖書館的石牆，一如僧院的山門，雋刻著兩行拉丁字：《CRESCAT SCIENTIA, VITA EXCOLATUR》。增長知識，充實生命。卑之無甚高論。平實地感覺不到一點熱情。讀不出知識與生命的聯繫，理論與實踐的關係，然而那樣斬釘截鐵的把這兩句話並列，又不禁讓人想像到，生命與知識之間終究還是有著某種神秘的牽連罷。突然我又憶起了我的《費爾巴哈提綱》，知識是為了創造更美好充實的生命，那麼我竟然又無意間走回大學時代的舊路了嗎？還是那莽撞的青春早就預示著我今天的道路？然則我終究是有所追尋而來的嗎？我把行李放在吳乃德在東56街845號的住處，和他一同走進校園。夾道是巨大古老的銀楓，秋陽自葉縫之間灑落，又被涼風捲起，我們在浮動的日光中穿過銀杏道，楓樹群，開始泛黃轉紅的樹葉如寂靜的火焰，在我們周遭燃起一場夢境。我們穿過拱門，走進Quadrangle，橡樹成林，我們向樹林深處走去，左轉，一座現代主義建築從歌德式經院群中驀然映入眼簾。乃德直走向前，繞到建築的正門。門外立著一個銅雕，由三座彎曲的銅柱自三方相會。牆上刻著義大利雕塑家Virginio Ferrari的名字，作品題名：《Dialogo》。真理源於對話之中。乃德停下來，指著這棟建築告訴我：「到了。」

此後的一段漫長的歲月當中，我會逐漸發現那條自山門延伸而來的小徑是一條陡峻的上坡路，我會發現經院古老黑色的石牆是一道道高聳的山壁。我的時間感會逐漸消失，我的生命會逐漸抽象，逐漸形式，而我的憂鬱，我的浪漫，我的熱情，會逐漸沈澱。我的偶然，會終於變成必然。我的理想，會昇華成幻滅。我的困惑，會終於在大雪之中清晰起來。

在山裡，知識，會終於變成實踐。
